Alcohol Can Damage your Skin

spa system

SOUTHWEST SUNSHINE understands how important a good skin care regimen is, but feeding your skin from the inside is just as important is feeding it on the outside.

Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing some beauty secrets that will help keep your skin looking young, healthy, smooth, and supple. Of course, that means the SOUTHWEST SUNSHINE all natural family skincare line on the outside, but we want to concentrate on feeding your skin from the inside as well.

Everyone likes a cocktail now and again, but what does it really do to your skin? Is a shot of tequila worse than a beer or vise versa?

According to Dr. David Colber, founder of the NY Dermatology Group, alcohol is a hepatotoxin. Alcohol also contains congeners. These substances are produced during fermentation. Those same congeners cause hangovers.

Alcohol also dehydrates your skin. This means when you wake up in the morning your skin will not be as fresh or as plump as it normally is.

Alcohol isn’t the only thing that can affect your skin. The mixers that you add to clear shots of tequila, gin, and vodka can be loaded with salt or sugar. The best alcohol to consume would be clear shots like gin, rum, or vodka, but it is important to remember that people tend to drink more when they are imbibing with shots.

Next on the list would be dark shots of tequila, rum, or whiskey as there are fewer additives, however, the difference between dark and light alcohol is the extra fermentation that goes into dark alcohol. The more congeners in your drink, the faster your skin will age.

Sweet mixed drinks can lead to systemic inflammation. That along with the extra carbs in drinks like Mojitos and Pina Coloda’s can cause cell damage, which will age your skin. The less sugar you consume in your alcoholic drinks the better. Avoid drinks mixed with energy drinks, soda, or orange juice. Remember, sugar can also cause acne as it spikes your levels of insulin. Sugar hangovers mixed with a regular hangover will result in bloodshot eyes and sallow looking skin.

Beer and wine can also affect your skin. Beer contains salt, which could give you thirsty skin and swollen eyes. It’s your body’s way of telling you that you need to drink water to rid your body of the salt.

Red wine has benefits, and can actually counteract the aging process as it supports the health of your skin. White wine on the other hand contains both salt and sugar leading to bloating and swollen skin. Unfortunately, white wine does not have the same health benefits that red wine does.

Start a New Tradition with Southwest Sunshine

Traditions are meant to be held on to, but unfortunately, during the holidays it is all too easy to forget where they came from or why they are even celebrated in the first place.

Every year people all over the globe put up a Christmas tree to celebrate the joy of the holiday season. The Christmas tree custom began in Germany tracing back to the 15th century. Devout Christians would bring decorated beautiful evergreen trees inside to share with their families. The St. George’s Church in Selestats began the tradition in 1521. The Christmas tree didn’t become popular elsewhere until the middle of the 19th century.

Early Christmas tree decorations were quite different than they are today. Christmas trees were decorated with apples, oranges and assorted nuts making them taste as good as they looked.

The Encyclopedia Britannica writes, “”The use of evergreen trees, wreaths, and garlands to symbolize eternal life was a custom of the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, and Hebrews. Tree worship was common among the pagan Europeans and survived their conversion to Christianity in the Scandinavian customs of decorating the house and barn with evergreens at the New Year to scare away the devil and of setting up a tree for the birds during Christmastime.”

In Great Britain, the Druids used evergreens to perform sacred winter solstice rituals. These wood priests also used mistletoe and holly. These were symbols of eternal life. Evergreen branches were placed over the doorways to ward off evil spirits.

During the Middle Ages, the Scandinavians and the Germans would place evergreens just outside the door or inside to show hope of a fruitful spring. Today’s modern Christmas trees and other decor come from these earlier traditions.

According to legend, Martin Luther started the tree decorating tradition on Christmas Eve around 1500. As he walked through the woods that were covered in snow, he was awestruck at the beauty of a small group of evergreens. The branches lightly shimmering under the light of the moon made him so excited that when he returned to his home he set up his own fir tree in order to share his story with his family. He decorated his, “Christmas tree,” with candles, which he lit in honor of Christ’s birth.

This Christmas celebrate the older traditions or create some new ones with the help of SOUTHWEST SUNSHINE.

Black Friday has not Always Been a Good Thing

black friday one

Black Friday is one of the biggest, if not largest, shopping days of the year, and although it began in the United States, Black Friday has recently become popular overseas.

The term Black Friday has been used in different contexts and was actually first coined after a financial crisis that occurred in 1869. As far as shopping goes, the earliest reference to Black Friday dates back to a newsletter in 1961 that clearly had negative implications. The newsletter talked about the traffic jams that occurred in Philadelphia the day after Thanksgiving with police nicknaming the day, Black Friday. Because the term wasn’t good for business, a Deputy City Representative was thwarted in his attempt to rename Black Friday, Big Friday.

The popularity of Black Friday truly is the official start to the holiday shopping season and linked with Santa Claus Parades. These parades usually include Santa’s first appearance at the end of the parade. When Macy’s and Eaton’s first held their Thanksgiving Day parades in the late 19th and early 20th century, they would use the Thanksgiving Day parades as a huge advertising push, creating an unwritten rule that there would be no Christmas advertising until after the parades were over.

Of course, this didn’t come without controversy. After the depression, retail shops wanted longer shopping seasons, but none of the big stores wanted to break with the tradition and be the first to start an advertising campaign before Thanksgiving so the President at the time, Franklin D. Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving a week earlier angering the public. Most refused to celebrate the day of thanks on two days with some even referring to Thanksgiving as Franksgiving.

Much has changed over the last few decades with Black Friday becoming a holiday in its own right, in fact California and some other states have actually declared the day after Thanksgiving a federal holiday much like Columbus Day. For some folks Black Friday is a tradition to stand, or sit, in line all day, or even days before Thanksgiving skipping the feast in favor of a new flat screen for $25.00.

Kiss Your Dry Skin Goodbye With Herbal Moisturizing Lotion

Once the leaves begin to change, so does your skin. During the fall and winter, you will begin to notice itchy, rough and even dry skin, especially if you are in an area that is cold and dry with harsh winds. Colder air has much less moisture and can be extremely drying, and that is where Southwest Sunshine comes in. Having a good skin care regimen is the best way to keep old man winter at bay.

Winds are extremely damaging and will strip your skin of its natural moisturizers. When you use Southwest Sunshine’s Herbal Moisturizing Lotion you can help your skin retains its own moisturizers.

If the heater is on constantly during the winter months, especially a forced air heating system, your skin is suffering. Consider buying a humidifier to keep the moisture locked inside your home.

Everyone loves a toasty fire, but the heat from an open log fire can also wreck havoc with your skin. If you must relax in front of the fire, stay a bit farther away, and don’t forget to apply your Herbal Moisturizing Lotion.

Taking hot baths and showers feel great, especially if you have been out in the cold, but those same showers and baths are quite damaging to your skin. As difficult as it may seem to take lukewarm baths and showers, try to limit your shower time to about 10 minutes. If you are having a bath, add some almond oil or lavender to the water to help moisturize your skin.

Believe it or not, a hot cup of cocoa could cause you to dehydrate, much the same as alcohol does. For every glass of wine or cup of caffeine you indulge in, chase it with a glass of water. If you can skip the coffee, have a cup of chamomile or green tea.

Southwest Sunshine’s Herbal Moisturizing Lotion is the perfect addition to your skincare regimen, Order today and give old man winter a run for his money with Southwest Sunshine’s Herbal Moisturizing Lotion.
