Although diabetes affects every part of your body, skin problems associated with the disease are usually the first signs that you have diabetes. Luckily, most of the skin conditions are easily treatable if caught early on. Skin conditions associated with diabetes include fungal and bacterial infections.

There are several types of bacterial infections that may occur if you have diabetes including;

  • Eyelid gland infections, also known as sties
  • Boils
  • Infections of hair follicles, or folliculitis
  • Carbuncles, which are deep skin infections and the underlying tissue
  • Infections surrounding the nails
  • Staph infections

Although bacterial infections were once life threatening, a physician can now treat them. However, doctors also believe that a good skin care routine, such as SOUTHWEST SUNSHINE, can also help with bacterial infections.

Fungal infections that often affect people with diabetes are known as Candida albicans. This yeast like fungal infection will create itchy rashes that are moist and red and are surrounded by scales and tiny blisters. These types of infections usually occur in the moist and warm folds of the skin including around the nails, the breasts, between your toes and fingers, around the corners of your mouth, the groin, and armpits. Common diabetic fungal infections include ringworm, vaginal infections, athlete’s foot, and jock itch.

Localized itching can also be a side effect of diabetes and is usually caused by poor circulation, dry skin or a yeast infection. When poor circulation is to blame for the itching, the worst areas are usually at the lower parts of your legs. Try using an all-natural moisturizer after you bathe, such as SOUTHWEST SUNSHINE to help with the itching.

Next week SOUTHWEST SUNSHINE will talk about other skin problems that can occur, and usually only happen to people with diabetes. These include diabetic blisters, diabetic dermopathy, necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorum, and eruptive xanthomatosis.

If you suffer from diabetes, or know someone who does, order all natural skin care products from SOUTHWEST SUNSHINE, as they may be able to help with some of your skin care problems associated with diabetes.
