Modern Day American Mother’s Day dates back to the middle of the 19th century before the civil war when Ann Reeves Jarvis from West Virginia started the Mother’s Day Work Clubs. The clubs were meant to teach women how to care for their own children. It is interesting to note that these clubs were quite important after the war and became a unifying force in a country that was still divided. In 1868, Jarvis started Mother’s Friendship Day, which helped mother’s gather together with both Confederate and Union soldiers for reconciliation.

Mother’s Day in America began back in 1908 becoming an official holiday in 1914. Created by Ann Jarvis, Daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis, Mother’s Day was a way to celebrate motherhood all over the country, Jarvis later denounced Mother’s Day because it became so commercialized. In fact, Jarvis was so upset that she spent the rest of her life trying to have it removed from the calendar.

Although some dates may vary with other countries celebrating Mothers Day on different days, Mothers Day usually falls on the second Sunday in May. Traditional gifts for Mothers Day include cards, flowers, chocolates and of course, Sunday brunch.

Mother’s Day may be a relatively new celebration in the United States, but it actually dates back to the ancient Romans and Greeks who held Mother’s Day festivals honoring Cybele and Rhea, the mother goddesses.

The Spirit of Christmas

Puritan Christmas BanChristmas has not always been a welcome tradition in the United States. In fact, the Puritans called the holiday un-Christian and upon arrival to the New World back in 1620, actually worked on December 25th.

Even after Puritanism began to wane, an Episcopal bishop in 1827 told his congregation that the devil had actually stolen Christmas by converting it into a day that was filled with shooting, swearing and worldly festivities. All throughout the 1800’s, Baptist, Presbyterian and Methodist churches closed their doors on December 25 because they did not accept Christmas Day as holy. In fact, only 18 states recognized Christmas during the Civil War.

Christmas began to gain popularity after Clement Clarke Moore wrote, “Visit from St. Nicholas.” However, it was the weekly drawings by Thomas Nast Harper that really swayed the religious leaders who began to think that maybe it wasn’t so bad after all. The drawings featured a white-bearded gentleman called Santa who gave out gifts to children.

In 1881, storefronts began to decorate their windows with Christmas cards, colorful ornaments and brightly wrapped gifts, and in 1888 JP Robert of Stratford in West Ham, unveiled the very first, “Santa’s Grotto,” with the bearded gentleman himself greeting children in order to fulfill their Christmas wish lists. By the late 1890’s it was a tradition to sit on Santa’s knee with storeowners all over the United States creating their own Santa’s Village.

The larger department stores adopted Christmas during the 1920’s by sponsoring the Christmas Shopping Season kicking off the day after Thanksgiving. However, all was not well with sermons all over the country calling Christmas a huge commercial racket.

Black Friday has not Always Been a Good Thing

Black Friday is one of the biggest, if not largest, shopping days of the year, and although it began in the United States, Black Friday has recently become popular overseas.

The term Black Friday has been used in different contexts and was actually first coined after a financial crisis that occurred in 1869. As far as shopping goes, the earliest reference to Black Friday dates back to a newsletter in 1961 that clearly had negative implications. The newsletter talked about the traffic jams that occurred in Philadelphia the day after Thanksgiving with police nicknaming the day, Black Friday. Because the term wasn’t good for business, a Deputy City Representative was thwarted in his attempt to rename Black Friday, Big Friday.

The popularity of Black Friday truly is the official start to the holiday shopping season and linked with Santa Claus Parades. These parades usually include Santa’s first appearance at the end of the parade. When Macy’s and Eaton’s first held their Thanksgiving Day parades in the late 19th and early 20th century, they would use the Thanksgiving Day parades as a huge advertising push, creating an unwritten rule that there would be no Christmas advertising until after the parades were over.

Of course, this didn’t come without controversy. After the depression, retail shops wanted longer shopping seasons, but none of the big stores wanted to break with the tradition and be the first to start an advertising campaign before Thanksgiving so the President at the time, Franklin D. Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving a week earlier angering the public. Most refused to celebrate the day of thanks on two days with some even referring to Thanksgiving as Franksgiving.

Much has changed over the last few decades with Black Friday becoming a holiday in its own right, in fact California and some other states have actually declared the day after Thanksgiving a federal holiday much like Columbus Day. For some folks Black Friday is a tradition to stand, or sit, in line all day, or even days before Thanksgiving skipping the feast in favor of a new flat screen for $25.00.

Once the leaves begin to change, so does your skin. During the fall and winter, you will begin to notice itchy, rough and even dry skin, especially if you are in an area that is cold and dry with harsh winds. Colder air has much less moisture and can be extremely drying, and that is where Southwest Sunshine comes in. Having a good skin care regimen is the best way to keep old man winter at bay.

Winds are extremely damaging and will strip your skin of its natural moisturizers. When you use Southwest Sunshine’s Herbal Moisturizing Lotion you can help your skin retains its own moisturizers.

If the heater is on constantly during the winter months, especially a forced air heating system, your skin is suffering. Consider buying a humidifier to keep the moisture locked inside your home.

Open-Fire-thumb

Everyone loves a toasty fire, but the heat from an open log fire can also wreck havoc with your skin. If you must relax in front of the fire, stay a bit farther away, and don’t forget to apply your Herbal Moisturizing Lotion.

Taking hot baths and showers feel great, especially if you have been out in the cold, but those same showers and baths are quite damaging to your skin. As difficult as it may seem to take lukewarm baths and showers, try to limit your shower time to about 10 minutes. If you are having a bath, add some almond oil or lavender to the water to help moisturize your skin.

Believe it or not, a hot cup of cocoa could cause you to dehydrate, much the same as alcohol does. For every glass of wine or cup of caffeine you indulge in, chase it with a glass of water. If you can skip the coffee, have a cup of chamomile or green tea.
